About
Toshie Takahashi is a researcher of artificial intelligence, society, and the future of human life. Her work develops the concept of Self-Creation, which explores how people reflexively create and recreate themselves through interactions with humans, AI, and media.
She is Professor in the School of Culture, Media and Society and the Institute for AI and Robotics at Waseda University in Tokyo, and an Associate Fellow of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge.
Her research examines the societal impact of emerging technologies, with particular attention to human-centered AI, young people and artificial intelligence, and the evolving relationship between humans and intelligent systems.
Professor Takahashi has held visiting appointments at the University of Oxford, the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, and Columbia University.
She previously led international research initiatives on youth and artificial intelligence, including the “A Future with AI”project conducted in collaboration with the United Nations and the GenZAI project within Japan’s Moonshot R&D Program.
Her book Towards the Age of Digital Wisdom (2016, in Japanese) received the Telecommunications Advancement Foundation Award.
She received her PhD in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an MA in Sociology from the University of Tokyo, and a BSc in Mathematics from Ochanomizu University.
Professor Takahashi advises governments, international organizations, and companies on the societal impact and governance of artificial intelligence.
She delivers keynote talks at international conferences, policy forums, and industry events on the societal implications of artificial intelligence.
